Ground to Cloud

Written and directed by Christine Marie

Off-Off-Broadway, Puppetry
Runs through 8.26.10
The New School for Drama Theatre, 151 Bank Street

BOTTOM LINE: Ground to Cloud is a fascinating play of lighting where shadows and light become narrative, cinematic, abstract, and three-dimensional.

More playing with light than a "light play," Ground to Cloud explores the visual and storytelling opportunities of different angles, intensities, and layering of light. Through shadow puppetry, people meet, depart, are trapped, and enact small vignettes. In other moments, multiple shadows are projected on the backdrop, their silhouettes overlapping. Ground to Cloud explores both abstract and narrative expression styles.

The light playing is often very cinematic, with cross fades, image layers, and transitions. There is even a 3-D section (glasses are provided on site, just like at the Regal!). Ground to Cloud isn't a play in the traditional sense, but it is a fantastic, engrossing visual kaleidoscope, and a Fringe must-see. This show is truly unique and lovely.
